The legendary tale of Tam O’Shanter has been brought to life in a spectacular community arts project - just in time for Burns Night this weekend.
The national bard’s most famous work is the latest addition to the spectacular revamp of Alloway Railway Tunnel, which aims to create one of Scotland’s longest murals.
The tunnel - just a stone’s throw from Burns’ birthplace – is being hand-painted by thousands of local people to transform it into a colourful new visitor attraction and community space.
The Tam O’ Shanter tavern scene is one of the highlights of the 150-metre trail depicting and celebrating Ayrshire’s rich history and was installed today, 23 January 2025 by acclaimed artist and project lead, Chris Rutterford.
Ron Ireland, Chair of the Alloway Railway Tunnel project, said: "The story of Tam O’Shanter is legendary. His place in our heritage is one we are extremely proud of, so we’ve made his famous tale a main feature in our mural.”
He added: “Our artist Chris Rutterford has executed the scene skilfully and beautifully.”
Work on the mural project - set up by a group of local volunteers - began in 2023. Since then, it has gained widespread support and funding from across the country, including from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, who have raised £46,450 for the art trail.
It’s hoped the full mural will be completed later this year and the help of the local community has been invaluable.
Chris Rutterford said: “Being able to unveil Tam in the tunnel ahead of Burns Night is really special and I’m so delighted the mural is being embraced and loved by the community. I’ve now worked alongside more than 2,000 amateur artists, all involved in hands-on painting, and together we are giving this forgotten tunnel a new lease of life.”
Visitors to the tunnel hoping to see the new portraits of Tam O’Shanter, Souter Johnnie and their cronies will have wait a few more weeks as the main tunnel is closed for construction works to create a new safer and more colourful pathway. Funding for this part of the project has come from Paths For All, Ian Finlay Fund to upgrade the active travel route running through the tunnel, enabling the local community to walk, wheel or cycle more for their everyday journeys. It will be well worth waiting for!
Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “The transformation of Alloway Railway Tunnel so far has been wonderful to see and we are proud our players are helping bring the project to life, for the benefit of the whole community. We can’t wait to see what lies ahead.”
