My favourite memories of Alloway

Our Tunnel Stories are about people who use the Alloway Tunnel and cycle path. We ask them what their favourite memories are about Alloway and South Ayrshire and why it’s a great place to live or visit. We’ll find out their recommendations to make sure you have a great experience here.

Where memories are made

Another Mother’s Day goes by and for me, the best part of this special day is the simple pleasure of spending time with my daughters and grandchildren. It’s these moments together that mean the most.  I know I will remember what we did and how I was made to feel, way longer than any gift I receive.

I remember my mum saying to me that the best time in her life was when her children were young and how quickly that stage passes you by. She was observing my busy family life in Alloway which was packed with going to school and work, driving the kids to all their various clubs and activities, being a mature student and somehow fitting in all the household chores.

Make time for family

Her words made me reflect on my life and prioritise ‘enjoying time together’ and appreciate the beautiful village where we lived. Our family favourite memories are cycling through Rozelle and Bellisle parks down to the promenade and cycling to Greenan Shore. We also loved just walking around the village, there are so interesting places to explore. It was a great way to wind down in the evenings or weekends. With no distractions, we had some great conversations on our walks that I know wouldn’t have happened if we were in the car.

Great place to live

We chose Alloway as place to live because we felt it was safe for children to go out to play and walk to school. It has good schools where our children have made life long friends. It’s got a real community feel about it and the people are friendly and welcoming.

Fun for the kids

Now I’m out and about with my grandchildren and our favourite places to visit are the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum children’s play area and the cycle path just opposite the entrance to the museum. It’s great to have a safe place for them to cycle or scoot and burn off their energy.

It’s still a long way off, but once the Alloway Tunnel mural is completed in 2024, I am looking forward to taking my family there and showing them the amazing art on the walls. We hope to have interactive elements so that people can find out more about Ayrshire History.

Meanwhile – to make our project happen, the priority has to be fundraising. If you would like to donate – however large or small. We would appreciate it. You can use the link below.
